Been setting up iPhones for a long time now. Recently I have been seeing a lot of cases of the default contacts a/c being set to Gmail instead of iCloud. Usually some of the contacts are Gmail contacts and the others are iCloud or just locally stored. Might be something to do with the updates to the Contacts App that added the Group feature in iOS 11 I think?

From there you can log into iCloud.com open the contacts web app click the gear at the bottom left and select all Click the gear at the bottom left and export vCard. To merge the duplicate cards and information, click the Merge button. How to Remove Duplicate iCloud Contacts on PC and Mac. Select All Contacts in the upper left corner of the screen.

However, my question is, why can't I just toggle off iCloud contacts and then toggle back on to merge the Gmail contacts with iCloud? This would be much faster. It seems that only locally stored contacts merge with iCloud. Is this correct?

We are in year 2020. I think the capability to merge online contacts from any service (be it Google or Apple etc) should be easy. I realise that the Gmail contacts essentially only display on the phone but reside on a Google server. However, since the iPhone has all the required credentials for Gmail and iCloud already, I think this merge should be possible. Maybe Apple and Google need to co-operate on this. Fat chance on that I guess :)
